Spalina’s Guide to Summer Skincare

With the warmer season just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about prepping your skin for the summer heat.

Prolonged sun exposure and heat can lead to dryness and skin damage such as sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer.

While it’s important to have a good, solid skincare routine year-round, making a few skincare changes when transitioning from one season to another is advisable.

To help make things easier for you, below is Spalina’s guide to summer skincare.

SPF is your BFF

I hope by now you already know not to leave out your sunscreen. Did you know that there are 3 types of rays that are dangerous to the skin?

  • UVB has a shorter wavelength and penetrates the outermost layers of the skin, causing sunburn.

  • UVA has longer wavelengths and is considered the most dangerous because it is proven to cause skin cancer. UVA, while less intense than UVB, can penetrate windows and also penetrates the skin more deeply resulting in premature aging and skin cancer.

  • Infrared rays consist of wavelengths that create heat, resulting in raised skin temperature. These rays can also penetrate clouds, glass, and even clothing causing wrinkles and photoaging.

This is why a broad-spectrum sunscreen is recommended. Spalina Skincare carries 2 types of broad-spectrum mineral sunscreens: Hydrating Mineral Zinc Oxide SPF 40 which provides luxury protection sans the white residue, and Mineral Tinted SPF 40 which hits two birds with one stone, giving you a gorgeous sun-protected glow.

Most people usually don’t know how much sunscreen should be applied, and if you’re in the same boat, here’s a tip: you should be using about 2 milligrams of sunscreen per square cm of skin, which (if you’re bad at math like I am) is equal to a shot glass or two tablespoons of sunscreen, making sure that you’re applying about a nickel-size on the face.

Also, always remember that you need to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours.

Wear minimal makeup

Imagine having a full face of makeup on a hot and humid day… Yeah, it doesn’t sound pretty at all.

For summer, it’s best to go minimal when it comes to makeup. Caking it on is just asking for disaster.

Opt for a tinted sunscreen if you really can’t go out without makeup. And while we’re on the subject of all-in-one beauty products, choose a lip, cheek, and eyelid tint that will last long and not melt off your face.

And if you want to add just a teeny bit more, go with sweat-proof and/or water-resistant makeup to avoid turning into a cakey, smeary mess.

Finish off with a good quality setting spray, and you’re good to go.

Go light with your skincare routine

Aside from sunscreen, a few skincare changes for the warmer season would benefit your skin. Put away the heavy creams for now and opt for more lightweight skincare products.

Licensed esthetician, Spela Hernandez, recommends the following product for summer:

  • Complex Vitamin C to protect your skin from free radicals. It has colloidal gold properties which are great for preventing and treating sun-damaged skin.

  • Peptide Firming Glow to boost the hydration and keep the firmness of your skin.

  • Weightless Probiotic Defense Cream a lightweight, oil-free, and nourishing moisturizing cream perfect for the summer season.

Wear “breathable” fabrics

Of course, during the summer season, we’re all about wearing as little clothing as possible, but it’s not enough that you’re wearing just a t-shirt and a pair of shorts.

Make sure that you’re wearing clothes made of “breathable” fabrics such as cotton and linen which are both great in the summer.

These types of fabrics also help reduce sweat. While sweat is good, it can also be not so good for the skin especially if you don’t change or shower after sweating in your clothes as this can lead to skin problems such as acne and irritation.

Keep Hydrated

Trust me, dehydration is not a good look. It can cause headaches, mood swings, and even premature wrinkles.

Keeping hydrated by drinking the recommended daily water intake also helps regulate your body temperature and acts as a natural diuretic.

So go on, buy that cute, trendy water tumbler if it’s going to help remind you to drink your water.
