The Best Way to Layer Your Serums

Serums are a fantastic way to get the most out of your skincare routine. They’re typically made with more concentrated ingredients and can be used in place of moisturizer, but they don’t leave your skin feeling greasy or oily. Serums are often used as the first step in a three-step routine, and they have an important role to play in layering your products for the best results.

Why you should use serums

The popularity of serums is growing rapidly because more people are learning about their benefits and discovering how easy it is to incorporate them into their daily routines. A serum’s active ingredients can penetrate deeper into the skin than any other skincare product, so they work faster and more effectively than creams or lotions alone.

Serums also help keep moisture in your skin longer than other products do, which means they’ll help keep your face looking fresh throughout the day—even if you’re under air conditioning or heating during different seasons! If you have dry skin, a hydrating serum can help lock in moisture to plump up your skin and reduce the appearance of fine lines. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, a light serum can help control sebum production without stripping away natural oils.

How to layer your serums

No matter what your skincare goals are, there’s a serum out there that can help you achieve them. The key to getting the most out of your serums is to layer them correctly so that each one has a chance to work its magic. Here’s how to do it:

Start with a clean face. Always apply serums to clean skin so that they can penetrate deep into the pores and get to work right away. Use a gentle cleanser or micellar water to remove any dirt, makeup, or oil before applying your serums.

Apply the thinnest serum first. If you’re using more than one serum, it’s important to start with the thinnest one and work your way up to the thicker formulas. This will help ensure that each serum has a chance to absorb fully into your skin before being covered by another product.

Layer your serums from lightest to heaviest. The general rule is to apply your serums from lightest to heaviest so that each one can penetrate deep into the skin without being hindered by a heavier formula on top. For example, if you’re using a hyaluronic acid serum followed by a vitamin C serum, apply the hyaluronic acid first and then follow with vitamin C.

Finish with a moisturizer. Once you’ve applied all of your serums, finish off your routine with a moisturizer to help lock in hydration and protect your skin from environmental aggressors. If you have oily or acne-prone skin, look for a light, oil-free moisturizer that won’t clog your pores.

Some things to keep in mind

  1. Avoid using more than 2 or 3 serums at a time. We get it, serums can be addicting and you probably own more than just 3, but you wouldn’t want to overstimulate your skin. Besides, piling on too many layers of serums may prevent the ingredients from absorbing through your skin effectively.

  2. Avoid using multiple acids in the same setting especially vitamin C and retinol. While these two offers great benefits to your skin, they don’t really play well together. What you can do is use vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night.
