TikTok Skincare Trends You Should Avoid and Why

It’s not impossible to suddenly find yourself obsessed with TikTok. It’s been a great source for following trends from fashion to beauty to fitness. Need some makeup tutorials or hair hacks? How about some skincare tips? Whatever it is, you’re sure to find it on TikTok simply by typing a few keywords on the search bar.

But keep in mind that sometimes, trends can cause more harm than good, especially when you follow certain skincare trends that don’t work well with your skin type or lifestyle.  So, what are some TikTok skincare trends you should avoid and why?

Sunscreen Contouring

Sunscreen contouring is a trend that’s been going around TikTok lately. It’s a process where you use sunscreen to create a more defined look by only applying the product to the parts of your face you want highlighted and applying lesser spf or even nothing at all on the parts of your face you want to look contoured.

I can’t stress enough how dangerous this trend is for your skin. Not to mention the fact that doing this won’t guarantee an even outcome since the different areas of your face don’t get the same amount of sun exposure. You’re not just going to end up with a patchy face, you’re also going to compromise your skin’s protective barrier causing you to age prematurely.

Aspirin Facial Mask

Another trend on TikTok is to take aspirin tablets, crush them and mix them in water to create a paste that you then spread all over your face. It is rumored to clear up acne, but the truth is this practice can be damaging to your skin. It can be easy for some people  to confuse aspirin, also known as acetylsalicylic acid, as being the same as salicylic acid, but they are actually different molecules.

There are a lot of complications that can arise from using aspirin as a facial mask. For one, putting aspirin on your skin can cause chemical burns and irritate the skin. Aspirin cannot unclog your pores or prevent acne breakouts so save yourself the hassle and risk by skipping this TikTok skincare trend.

BB Microneedling

BB Microneedling is the process where you use a microneedling device to tattoo a BB cream product into the skin, creating a sort of semi-permanent makeup effect.

For some, this may seem like a great idea especially if you’re looking to cut down on time spent applying makeup. Plus, looking flawless all the time can be pretty enticing; #wokeuplikethis selfies, anyone?

But this method doesn’t come without risks and is not advised by most skincare professionals. First of all, BB Microneedling is not yet approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration. That in itself should already give off warning bells.

Second, the non-biodegradable substances that can be found in BB creams accumulate on your skin over time, and putting it into your skin may trigger an immune response. And unlike other semi-permanent makeup procedures such as lip color or eyebrow microshading, when you opt for BB Microneedling, you’re putting the product all over your face which increases the chances of complications and dangerous side effects.

These TikTok skincare trends may seem like a good idea on the surface, but the consequences of succumbing to these instant gratifications are going to be harder to deal with down the road.

There’s usually nothing wrong with following skincare trends, but just remember to always take the time to do your research before trying anything new. Your best bet will always be to consult a professional.
