Is Skin Icing The Next Skincare Holy Grail?

Skin icing is a skincare practice that has been around for many years but has recently become popular again. And why not? It’s a convenient and affordable way to achieve glowing skin! And did we mention you can totally do it at home?

If you’re curious about how it works and want to learn more about it, then keep reading. In this blog post, we’ll talk about what skin icing is, why people do it, the benefits and drawbacks, as well as some tips on the proper way to do it.

What is skin icing?

Skin icing or facial cryotherapy — as you might have guessed, it involves rubbing ice or with a skincare tool kept in the freezer over your skin. Whether it is a simple ice cube or a recent trending ice-based tool, the benefits of icing can go a long way. Not only does it feel refreshing, but there are also several reasons why it has become popular.

While it can be done at a spa or with a guidance of an esthetician, it’s very easy to do your simple ice facials at home all by yourself.

Is ice good for the skin?

Think of skincare products stored in a skincare fridge. It’s quite similar to the idea of skin icing. Icing is said to constrict blood vessels in your face, which can lessen the appearance of pores and wrinkles and eventually make you look lighter, brighter, and more radiant.

Why do people do it?

The reasons are actually pretty simple. Who doesn’t love a cost-effective, effortless, and natural way to a promising glow that shows minimal to no risks at all? Not to mention that many have claimed to see visible results just in a few weeks of starting it!

What are the benefits and drawbacks of skin icing?

Icing improves blood circulation by reducing the blood flow in the capillaries and lessening the quantity of blood under the skin, which sends an increased flow of warm blood into the area. This flow helps clear up the toxins and rejuvenates the skin, thereby helping the dullness and tiredness of the skin disappear. This is a great method for people who don’t get enough sleep at night to eliminate the puffiness of the eyes, and it adds up to a quick relief!

The skin pores are also minimized during icing, reducing oiliness and preventing acne, pimples, blackheads, and blemishes. And because the coldness of the ice can tighten your pores, it helps to also lessen the appearance of wrinkles, resulting in clearer and younger-looking skin.

However, while ice therapy provides numerous benefits and is generally safe for most skin types, some drawbacks may occur if not done properly. We recommend consulting with an esthetician if you want to avoid skin damage such as burns or frostbites.

What to do before skin icing?

Our skin is very sensitive to what we use, so here are some post-care tips you can do before skin icing to avoid any damage:

  • Gently cleanse your face thoroughly before proceeding. We recommend Spalina Skincare’s Biotic Mangosteen Cleanse as it is a superpowered yet gentle cleanser that leaves your skin with a radiant and healthy glow.

  • Apply serum and moisturizer before skin icing to protect your skin barrier as well as to help the ingredients penetrate your skin on a deeper level.

  • If you plan to use a skincare tool, make sure that it is properly sanitized. You won’t want it to transfer some bacteria to your skin!

  •  Always wrap the ice in a thin washcloth or gauze, so the ice is not directly in contact with your skin. This helps prevent ice burn and/or other skin damage.

  • If you plan on wearing makeup, icing your skin before is a fantastic method to reduce the appearance of pores.

  • Know what part of your skin is most sensitive or has a thin layer; it will give you an idea of how long you’ll have to ice it on. Also, don’t rub the ice too hard under your eyes.

  • Try making ice cubes out of other healthy products. Lemon juice, rose water, green tea, cucumber juice, or chamomile tea can enhance the effects of ice cubes on your skin. This way, you’re maximizing the benefits of skin icing by combining it with other ingredients that are beneficial to your skin too.

  • Don’t ice your skin more than once a day.

Skin Care Tips After Skin Icing

Here are some effective aftercare tips you can do after skin icing your face to add up to a more promising glowing skin:

  • Don’t massage one area of your skin with ice for more than a minute, as it could cause skin damage – especially on the sensitive parts.

  • Apply sunscreen before going out.

  • Avoid using chemical or physical exfoliation such as retinoids or benzoyl peroxide as these can irritate your skin.

  • Complement the depuffing powers of skin icing with Spalina Skincare’s Eye Repair Cream. It is suited for all skin types, and treats dark under-eye circles, reduces puffiness, and gently firms the sensitive skin surrounding the eye.
